As you probably know, this prosperous
Roman town was engulfed during an eruption of Mount
Vesuvius in 79 AD, and many of its inhabitants perished
in clouds of poisonous gas. As the ruins are now
deteriorating, much of the artwork has been removed
to Naples Museum for safekeeping. The wonderful
photographs below, taken by my friend Mary Harrsch,
express more than my words ever could. Note the
ominous presence of the still-active volcano in
the background of some shots…
